On May 9th, in Mahajanga, the Akbaraly Foundation carried out an awareness and prevention campaign against breast and uterine cancer, in partnership with the Boeny Red Cross.
The Foundation participated with 7 members of the Candide Hospital team, whereas the Red Cross participated with 16 of its volunteers. 5 paramedic interns and a doctor from Soroptimist – Mahajanga also took part in this activities.
Our team carried out 280 consultations, 51 ultrasounds, 11 biopsies, 3 fine needle aspirations, 8 evacuating punctures and 218 Pap-tests.
Dr. Candide, Scientific Coordinator of the Candide Hospital, said: “we achieved our expected goal, because so many women took part in this activity. So many, in fact, that they exceeded our expectations, so we didn’t have time to examine them all during one day. We asked the remaining women, which numbered about 50, to come to the Candide Hospital on May 11th and 12th.
Unfortunately, during the breast exams we diagnosed a number of cases of cancer in a very advanced stage. This is another reason why raising awareness and talking about prevention is so important for the entire population”.
This mass screening and awareness campaign, due to the collaboration between the Akbaraly Foundation and the Boeny Red Cross, was definitely a success. Many women decided to participate and to have a preventive screening, and we hope that in the future we will be able to reach out to even more people so that they can take care our their health and be protected against cancer.
We would like to thank all the people, near and far, who have participated in this successful celebration.
