Cancer is a disease whose treatment is still too expensive for most people in the world. Due to the country's economic and social situation, Madagascar has a high mortality ratio.
That is why the Foundation believes that the only way to improve those statistics is to work on early diagnosis.
4AWOMAN offers a complete awareness and prevention program that significantly reduces the incidence and mortality of both breast and cervical cancer. In both health centers, in the North and in South of Madagascar, the Akbaraly Foundation offers oncological services for women. Our scientific team has put in place a medical follow-up process to improve early detection conditions, resulting in saving more lives.
The Women's Path
The Women's Path is a program that has been started by the Foundation in its two Women and Children Prevention and Health Centers in the cities of Fianarantsoa (in the Haute-Matsiatra region) and Mahajanga (Boeny region). The program has three different stages:
The Foundation’s medical teams are organizing awareness sessions addressed to women living in urban suburbs and rural areas, with the aim of promoting women's health and of spreading more information about healthy lifestyles, cancer and the need for regular checkups.
Our Prevention and Health Centers are the reference point for women who want to get medical checkups. Our specialists are available for early diagnosis and screening activities with the support of the latest technologies, such as digital ultrasounds and mammograms, HPV and Pap test. At the same time, our centers are the ideal places to train young doctors and local technical staff.
In the case of women with precancerous and cancerous lesions, our doctors will immediately refer patients to the closest public or private health center for a possible cancer treatment (cryotherapy, LEEP procedure, surgery, chemotherapy, palliative care). The material support and the development of new activities within the partner centers at a regional level is a crucial point for the Foundation, in order to ensure that the patient is properly cared for. Our ambition is to integrate new services in the long run, offering a complete care program to the women who rely on our care.
In order to make our centers the reference points for women's health, we offer also maternal and child health services and general medical consultations for women. Over the years, our center has become the main reference point for women’s health. We visit, we treat, we raise awareness and we give medical advice.
Thanks to the collaboration with the Italian and Malagasy Red Cross we have started the Mobile Unit project.
The project consist of a road vehicle with medical equipment, meant to be used for awareness-raising campaigns and prevention against women's cancers, as well as to promote the population’s general health through vaccination campaigns, HIV prevention and much more.
The "Prevention and Health Center for Women and Child" in Fianarantsoa works closely with the the city University Hospital Center (CHU), and four more health centers within the region (Sakalanina, Mahasoa, Salfa Ivory and Ampasimanjeva).
Our center has become a benchmark that can meet the demands and needs of the most vulnerable segments of the population: this is because of its strategic position, which allows us to respond to the need for prevention and treatment in the southern regions, and because of its qualified services of cytology and anatomical pathology.
In September 2012, our doctors have launched a pilot project, which is still in progress, which includes the use of the HPV test during the screening. The objective is to confirm the greater clinical efficacy (and logistics) of HPV testing compared to traditional methods.
Since mid-2014, the center also offers prenatal and pediatric consultations. The center's staff includes 12 healthcare workers, consisting of laboratory technicians, doctors, nurses and midwives.
Summary of our activities 2013 and 2014
|Numbers of women involved||2623||6514|
|Referred to the CHU||8||31|
Opened in 2012, the Health Center of Mahajanga is located in the middle of one of the poorest neighborhoods of the city, in order to be as close as possible to the most vulnerable groups.
Our Center works in close collaboration with the Bardelli Health Center, which is recognized as a basic health center.
Like in Fianarantsoa, our Center has activated the "Women’s Path", which uses awareness, prevention and cancer diagnosis for women as its main intervention tools. The Bardelli Health Center deals with the integration of several services dedicated to maternity and child protection.
The entire structure also collaborates with the University Hospital Centre of the city, with Health Centers at regional level and in close contact with local authorities.
The network built at the local and regional level has enabled the Foundation’s Center to become a point of reference for everything concerning Women's Health.
Some of the Mahajanga Center data:
|Numbers of women involved||0||1393|
The Mobile Unit project, which is a collaboration between the Foundation and a series of local and international partners, started in October 2014.
The project consist of a road vehicle with medical equipment meant to be used for awareness-raising campaigns and prevention against women’s cancers, as well as to promote the population’s health through vaccination campaigns, HIV prevention and much more.
The Mobile Unit was born from the need to reach those segments of the population who live in rural areas and who hardly have any access to public health services.
THE ADDED VALUE: The installation of a Telemedicine service in the vehicle allows us to shorten the time between a positive result of a test and the referral of the patient to the most appropriate health center for the treatment of the disease.
